Our Approach to New Locations

As photographers, stepping into a completely new international location is both a profound honour and a creative challenge. People often ask us how we handle shooting in destinations we’ve never visited before. Our philosophy is rooted in meticulous preparation balanced with open artistic intuition.

For this unique Japan wedding, our approach began long before the wedding day itself. We flew into Kyoto early to do some serious pre-scouting, mapping out how the light shifted throughout the day and hunting down those hidden, historic alleyways away from the usual tourist buzz.

Following our scout, we held a casual pre-couple photo session with Denise and Luke. This allowed them to get comfortable in front of our lenses, shake off any travel fatigue, and gave us the perfect opportunity to try out a fresh, new background location we’ve been dreaming of shooting. By the time the elopement day arrived, we felt less like a hired photo crew and more like old friends taking a stroll through history.

An Authentic, Documentary Narrative

When it came to the visual direction of Denise and Luke’s gallery, the vibe was undeniably candid, documentary, and completely in the moment. The morning started off at The Ace Hotel Kyoto, where the two of them chose to get ready together. It was a space filled with quiet, slow moments that felt incredibly intimate. From there, we hopped into a local taxi, watching the rain-streaked city pass by as we headed to the traditional gardens for their private vows.

Our goal for the entire day was to capture each moment exactly the way it felt, creating a narrative that came full circle—from the calm of the morning to the emotion of the gardens, right back to where it all started at the hotel. By prioritizing this documentary approach, the resulting images aren’t just pictures—they are a vivid, cinematic record of raw emotion, capturing the honesty of their bond against the timeless, textured backdrop of Japan.

When the Weather Favours the Romantic

If there is one thing a wedding day timeline can’t control, it’s the weather—but sometimes, the elements give you a gift you didn’t know you needed. On the day of the elopement, the skies over Kyoto opened up into a steady, soft rain. While some might worry about a rainy forecast, it quickly became clear that the weather was working entirely in everyone’s favour.

The rain transformed Kyoto into an atmospheric masterpiece. The stone-paved streets gleamed under the soft gray sky, the autumn foliage became instantly vibrant, and, best of all, the typical bustling crowds completely vanished.

In an incredibly tranquil, rain-kissed traditional garden, Denise and Luke shared their private vows. Wrapped in a serene, mist-covered intimacy with only the sound of raindrops falling on the temple pond, they promised forever to one another. It was an incredibly moving moment—standing there under our umbrellas, we found ourselves getting emotional right along with them. It was romantic, deeply personal, and utterly poetic.
