I’m a real history buff and getting to combine that with my love of weddings, and my love of photography and shoot at one of Canada’s most historic buildings, made shooting this Fairmont Royal York wedding really special.
Even though Toronto is such a buzzing, vibrant, modern city; walking through the doors and into the grand lobby at the Fairmont Royal York brings you to a different time; one of grandeur and opulence. It’s the most incredible location for a wedding, and the perfect fit for Ashley and Jahanzeb!
The Royal York was completed in 1929, and although it’s been renovated a few times since, still retains so much of that classic 20’s, Great Gatsby level of lavish and luxury. And of course, being a lover of the royal family, one of the coolest aspects for me about the hotel is that it is the official residence of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in Canada!
But it was a different Queen and King that inspired Ashley and Jahanzeb for their Fairmont Royal York wedding, Queen Titania and King Oberon from Shakespeare’s famous love story A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Queen and King of the fairies, who live in a magical forest, and who, through all obstacles are constantly drawn together to find themselves blissfully in love to have their happily ever after. Pretty good inspiration for a wedding if you ask me!
I can’t applaud planner Cynthia Martin Events enough, walking in, you truly felt like you were in a magical fairyland. The floral decor, by Sweet Woodruff, was exquisite! A mix of trees, vines and topiary shrubs complimented the white and light pink roses that, although were on bushes, seemed to be growing right out of the floor! The flora blended perfectly with the green marble pillars in the room to create the optic effect of trees! When the happy couple sat for their ceremony, it was beneath a stunning white drapery, crystal chandelier and surrounded by white candles. Combine that with their outstanding wedding outfits, and they were easily one of the most regal couples I’ve ever shot.
Jahanzeb’s formal wear, by Hasan Sheheryar Yasin, was a mix of black and gold, while Ashleys dress, by Tena Durrani, was a stunning shade of red with light pink, gold, and cream accents. I kept thinking during my creative shoot with the couple that it felt more like a high fashion shoot as their outfits were just so incredible! The way the dress moved when Ashley walked, and the way her jewelry and the gold accents on both of their outfits caught the early evening light was magical.
Continuing on with their own Midsummer Night’s Dream, the reception continued to transport us to another world. Tall trees lined the room, while beautiful arrangements of flowers and leaves were on the tables, so when you looked down from your seat, flowers were surrounding you. The warm light from the chandeliers basked the room, and the new couple, in a warm glow and everyone ate and drank and celebrated with full hearts.
Ashley and Jahanzeb achieved a feat not many could. For their Pakistani Fairmont Royal York wedding they retained their culture, while simultaneously making the ceremony and festivities modern, traditional, magical, fun and most importantly a day of great love that could easily be felt by anyone standing In the room, including myself!
It was such a pleasure to work with Ashley and Jahanzeb to capture their special day and we are so grateful they brought us into their fairytale fit for a King and Queen!
